Site Server 3.0 Setup Fails When Installed on an Existing Internet Information Server 4.0 Computer

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Site Server version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

During the installation of Site Server 3.0, setup fails to complete successfully.

CAUSE

The Site Server installation assumes that the Default Web Site has not been changed. This extends to Directory Security and authentication methods allowed or supported.

RESOLUTION

The most common change is that either Anonymous access is no longer allowed or Windows NT Challenge Response is no longer enabled. The correct security settings are as follows:

Anonymous: Allowed
Basic Authentication: Not Allowed
NT Challenge Response: Allowed
After the changes are made, re-run the Site Server Setup program.

Note: You can change back to the desired settings after Site Server has installed successfully.
